Camoflauge Text Effect

In this tutorial I'll firstly walk you through making the background texture (camoflauge,) then making the text effect with the camoflauge applied to it.

1.

Firstly start by creating a new document in Photoshop (File > New,) you can use any size you want, I used a size of 450 x 300 pixels.
After creating your new document, fill the background with a brownish color (#614f21.) Now you might want to go to Google Images and find an image of some real camoflauge so you can base yours off of it, go here to see the camoflauge picture that I used. So after you've got your base camoflauge image, use the Pen Tool to draw the shapes and fill them with colors.

2.

To give your camoflauge some more texture, firstly merge all the layers together or create a new layer and apply the image (Image > Apply Image...) then apply some nice filters. For example:
Filter > Noise > Add Noise, Filter > Texture > Texturizer, Filter > Artistic > Underpainting. You might need to fade the filters and fiddle with opacity settings.

Lastly you need to turn your texture into a pattern by following these two simple steps:
  1. Select your whole document (CTRL + A)
  2. In the menus go to Edit > Define Pattern.

3.

After you've made your camoflauge texture and defined it as a pattern etc, either create a new document and fill the background with your pattern or simply write out some text on a new layer.

The font used above is called Arial Black, Italic, size 125 pt, #000000.
After writing out your text, go into the Blending Options for your text layer and apply the following layer styles:
  1. Outer Glow
  2. Inner Glow
  3. Bevel and Emboss
  4. Gradient Overlay
  5. Pattern Overlay
If you used all the correct settings, your text should now look something like this:

4.

To finish things off you might want to apply some filters to make the picture look a little nicer. Firstly merge the layers together and apply some filters such as Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen (then fade,) Filter > Render > Lighting Effects (then fade.)

If you want, you can of course download the PSD file from here.
