The Pros and Cons of the Digg Effect
Today I have be talking to Dean Hunt quite a lot, he writes for our other young entrepreneurs blog Retired at 21. He posted a article about Self Improvement Advice from the Devil, every few minutes he would show me his progress on getting traffic from social media. Im sure he will be bringing out a detailed post about the effects of social bookmarking, but heres my take on Digg.
Pros
- Can bring 100,000′s visitors in just one day!
- Gets you quickly indexed by search engines, a hour after hitting homepage of digg the article was picked up on Google for a very competetive term!

- Back Links, you can pick up 100′s of links to your website.
- Will increase your website value, more visitors your website gets usualy means higher priced paid for a website.
- Capturing emails, although the conversion rate is low, you still can manage to pick up a few 100 email address’s.
Cons
- Digg users rarely click on adverts
- Stay on your website for a average of 7 seconds which means no comments, or posts.
- In many cases will crash your server because of the amount of visitors flooding into your website
- It isnt targed traffic, the visitors to your website may not be interested in it at all
- They are the kind of critiques that can only say bad things about something.

In my humble opinion, a site like digg is best only used when you know the ways and means of getting your article to the top. For several submissions I have attempted this; but no results have come of it, it pays to know people.

I agree, with out people you are in direct contact with its impossible to get to the homepage. A fan base is always wise and a great article is a must!

OMG this is so true, I find the flood of traffic is gone in less than 30 seconds, they come, have a look, and leave! and NEVER click on ads.

I never really understood DIGG nor did I feel it gave the right amount of exposure to your articles or other web material. Nice one though. Cheers, Eddie Gear
