As you can see, Oprah has an impressive 12%, but word of mouth claims top spot with a mind-blowing 55%.
Amazingly there are many businesses that would pay millions of dollars just for a quick mention from Oprah, yet word of mouth is almost 5 times more powerful, valuable and effective.

People want the mention on Oprah as it is a launching pad to then spur referrals. If no one knows about you in the first place, no matter how good you are, you will not get referrals.

I would have to say your right in a lot of ways, John Chow could send you 12% of your traffic but compared to a 55% you could get from word of mouth. Word of mouth is more important, will look forward to seeing a post about Word of Mouth Marketing.
