Entrepreneurs get paid to bust through and do the things that cause most people discomfort
Adam Schran of FinallyFast.com lets us have some of his top tips for success in business — listen up — this guy is good!
Adam and my father, Barry Dunlop recently got to spend 6 days on Necker Island with a small group of amazing entrepreneurs and Sir Richard Branson the Billionaire Founder of the Virgin Group.
Once again I am fortunate that they did not forget us young entrepreneurs and took some time to record this video (along with a transcription)
I really like this quote in particular from Adam:
“Entrepreneurs get paid, in my opinion, to bust through and do the things that cause you discomfort. Everyone can do ten out of fifteen things that is easy and is in their comfort zone, but to do the difficult stuff, it’s annoying and it’s tough. Your brain will try to talk you out it and trick you out of it, but that’s what you get paid to do”
Enjoy and please comment.
Transcription:
Barry Dunlop: Adam, a question that everybody, whether they’re old or young and they’re going into business for the first time, whether it’s offline or online is, what’s the ‘secret sauce’, what’s the special ingredient that we need in order to be a successful entrepreneur? Because I’m an entrepreneur I know there’s many answers, but can you pick out one or two things that you think that makes a real difference?
Adam Schran: Sure, well having a successful venture is sort of like flying an airplane. There’s a lot of different levels to it. When you’re flying an airplane you have to fly it, you’ve got to navigate. You’ve got to get on the radio. You have to manage the engine and be an aero-mechanic. It’s similar to that with a company. You have to be good at hiring and finding people, launching a product, helping people solve a problem in their lives or with their business. Managing the numbers and being creative and organize all at the same time.
When you get something going and launching an online business, or even if it’s offline, there will be things that you’re comfortable with and there will be things that cause you some anxiety and that you avoid.
Entrepreneurs get paid, in my opinion, to bust through and do the things that cause you discomfort. Everyone can do ten out of fifteen things that is easy and is in their comfort zone, but to do the difficult stuff, it’s annoying and it’s tough. Your brain will try to talk you out it and trick you out of it, but that’s what you get paid to do.
My advice to every one is to bulldog through it. Understand that every entrepreneur, with very few exceptions, gets hung up at certain steps along the way and you just have to push through as best you can.
Barry: Adam that’s an awesome answer. I really appreciate it. I’ve got to ask you one more question. You actually are now, your quite modest about it, but you’re a pretty successful young man. What’s a couple little rewards you’ve had for your own success? How do you enjoy yourself?
Adam: It’s important to spoil yourself along the way. You can get caught in the rat race and torture yourself when you’re working long hours to make a business succeed. You’ve got to stop and take care of yourself along the way. Spoil your friends too. But never be afraid of peoples’ envy. Because as your business gets started people may try to talk you out of it especially in certain areas where they don’t appreciate the entrepreneurial thing as much. Treat yourself to trips to Necker Island or a local spa or massage, whatever is fun.

Good advice from Adam. As a young entrepreneur there is a lot of work you have to do. To succeed you have to be willing to work your ass off. If you stick with it, it'll all be worthwhile in the end. That must have been an amazing 6 days on Necker Island. Richard Branson is quite the character. All the other entrepreneurs must have had a lot to say too.

I wonder how old Adam Schran is. Personally, I can hear and see why Adam Schran is successful, just by hearing the way he talks and represents himself, and the way is he is able to articulate the words, man Adam is awesome! Till then, Jean

I was so impressed with what Adam had to say, that I showed it around to my entire family, Although my sister didn't really "get it" as far as what Adam had to say, but perhaps in the future, what Adam has to say will start sinking in more, I think especially once people go out there and realize that they are not bulldogging threw the hard stuff as they should be. That is if they are honest with themselves, and not let their brain say otherwise. -Randy

That is so true. It's extremely difficult to get over those things that are uncomfortable. Knowing many software developers and being one myself, we can create some incredible pieces of software or websites, but often get caught up in not being able to do many of the business aspects involved in running an online business. Being able to get over that discomfort and being able to do all aspects of a business successfully could really make a good entrepreneur.
